Congratulations, you’ve made it through the first week of classes! If you’re like me, you’re probably already pretty wiped from the busy schedule that comes with the school year. It’s tough to come back to classes after a few months of lounging around in comfy clothes and watching more Netflix than is probably healthy. The first week is jam-packed with great stuff, and it’s even more intense if you were involved with orientation week in any way.
The first week of school is always lots of fun; it might actually be my favorite week of the entire Fall semester. All of the campus ministry cookouts (although if I see another hamburger I swear…), more free t-shirts than you know what to do with, and of course the wonderful first day of class where the professor simply reads the syllabus and lets you leave. It’s a great time to relax, get back into the swing of things, and set yourself up for success the rest of the year.
My favorite part of the first two weeks of school is the willingness of people to do new things and make new friends. Take advantage of this to broaden your social circles and invest in the lives of others that you haven’t spent much time with before. The first two weeks of the fall is a great time to start a new habit. Try going to the gym regularly, reach out to a group of friends and start a weekly Bible study, or maybe just pick up a book and read it for fun. It’s amazing how open people (including yourself!) are during the first two weeks before the routine of life has really set in.
Be intentional about making the most of these first weeks. Before you know it, you’ll be sitting in McFarlin cramming for a final that starts in two hours and wondering where the time has gone. Don’t let the time that you have now slip away!
